Prof Richard Edwards told RNZ that the 2025 Smokefree goal is in jeopardy if smoking rates continue to flatline as revealed by the NZ Health Survey data.

Prof Edwards was responding questions about the 21 November Briefing by members of ASPIRE Aotearoa - Smoking prevalence and trends: Important findings from the 2023-24 New Zealand Health Survey.

He also spoke to Newstalk ZB on the smoking prevalence data and the latest on the vaping stats as laid out in the Briefing Vaping prevalence and trends: Important findings from 2023-24 NZ Health Survey.

The data show vaping prevalence is particularly high among younger age groups, Māori and Pacific peoples, and people living in neighbourhoods with higher levels of deprivation.
